Alsius is a pioneer in the development of advanced intravascular temperature management therapies for critically ill patients in the intensive care, emergency department, or surgical setting.
Unlike traditional external methods - such as cooling or warming blankets or gel pads and ice packs, Alsius manages patient warming and cooling from the inside out using proprietary catheter-based technology.
The result - rapid and precise control of core body temperature - considered standard of care therapy in many critical care situations.
Founded in 1998, Alsius Intravascular Temperature Management Systems have been used to treat over 10,000 patients in over 30 countries around the world.
Intravascular Temperature Management (IVTM)

Alsius proprietary IVTM technology gets to the core of the temperature issue by managing patient temperature from the inside out.
An Alsius catheter is inserted into the central venous system of a critically ill or surgical patient (femoral, subclavian, or internal jugular insertion). The Alsius Coolgard 3000 or Thermogard XP thermal regulation system controls the temperature of the saline circulating through the catheter balloons via remote sensing of the patients temperature. The patient is cooled or warmed as venous blood passes over each balloon - exchanging heat without infusing saline into the patient.
The benefits of IVTM include:
- Superior temperature control
- Improved patient access
- Reduced nursing time
- Triple lumen central venous catheter access
- Alsius Systems and Catheters

Alsius catheters vary in length and number of balloons. In addition to temperature management, all Alsius catheters support standard central venous catheter functions.

Clinical
Temperature is Vital
Today, major medical societies recommend temperature management as the standard of care therapy for many critically ill or surgical patients. Visit the reference section to review a selection of recent publications that address the use of temperature management for the following established and investigational clinical indications.
Therapeutic Cooling
- Reducing Fever
- Induced Hypothermia following cardiac arrest, spinal and brain injury
- Other Therapeutic Warming
- Trauma and accidental hypothermia
- Surgery
- Other
Traditional external temperature management methods, such as cooling and warming blankets, gel pads or ice packs remain common in ICU's, burn centers, emergency deparmentments and surgical suites. However, nurses and physicians recognize the limitations of external methods in that they are clinically inefficient, labor intensive and limit access to critically ill patients. The Alsius Intravascular Temperature Management (IVTMT) method has been recognized as a safe and effective method for controlling core body temperature. Superior, in fact, to other cooling methods for achieving and maintaining target temperature.
Support
We offer extensive product support and educational programs on the use and clinical application of our proprietary intravascular temperature management products. Our support programs are designed to maximize the benefit Alsius IVTM affords healthcare providers and the critically ill patients they treat.
